Squeggee, screens and smelly ink

By robertgaddie

Did you know that for close to 8 years I was a screen printer! I cut many a stencil, mixed many shades of ink, and pulled many a squeggee on my 60″ x 40″ one armed bandit (little screen print humour for those in the know) no automated print machinery for me. I loved it!! The countless clothes I ruined with accidental finger marks of undetected ink.

No real need for me to remind you of the lovely smell, ink texture, vibrant colours, crafted charm etc etc that all make up this wonderful print process.

Any ways… In truth I am a bit downbeat. I wrote one of my first new posts back in January of this year offering a free poster print run. I was certain this was going to be a runaway success and my inbox would be brimming with entry hopeful’s.

It seems that this charming and quirky process still after all these years remains close to heart for many a designer. Every one seems to be ‘at it’ crafting all manner of prints and t-shirts etc.

I like to think that no one really got a chance to view my obscure little post and bathe in all that is screen print.

Well here goes again. This is what is on offer. The task is for me to return to my youth and the skill-set I studied for. With kind assistance from one of my favorite screen-printers who are willing to  let me loose in their studio to print my own set of prints.

I need the artwork. No theme. Here is the chance for anyone to get a design realized and printed by me free of charge.

A2. Up to 4 line colours. Printed onto colorplan paper – any colour of your choosing.

My favorite design wins and chosen in time to print by end of November this year ready for Christmas.

300 off (200 for the designer and 100 for CrayFish to use) and perhaps a bit of press if we are lucky.

I hope this time around I get some takers.

Please get designing. Spread the word … the more the merrier.

Thanks

Rob

Is there a limit on the number of submissions per person?

    Hi Aaron

    Thanks for your comment.
Happy to see a few individual entries… perhaps no more than 3.

open to overseas submissions? i would imagine the weight could drive up shipping quite a bit on 200 posters…

    Hi Jamie

Thanks for your interest in my project.
Yes I am happy to take worldwide submissions.
We may have to discuss shipping should your entry be chosen.
I am curious though… how did you hear about the project there in Chicago?

    Looking forward to your entry.

actually, i’m not sure how i ended up here haha. i browse design and screenprinting related sites all the time between projects and somehow got linked to this particular post on your site.

i actually own and operate a screenprinting shop in the front of my building, but unfortunately, i’ve never had the opportunity to experiment with printing posters (i have to outsource our poster jobs), but i LOVE them! they look and feel great, nothing can imitate them. when i opened my first screenprinting shop over a year ago, it was partially so i could print posters, but we were too busy with apparel production to do them. then i sold my portion of the company and opened a new smaller (less hectic) shop about 2 months ago. i’m still constantly busy with apparel orders, but i hope to learn to print posters, signs, stickers and other cool stuff some day soon too.

    Hi Aaron

    Thanks for the mail.
Yes the winning entry has been chosen and the winner contacted. The prints will be complete in a week or so.
I will put up a posting very early into January with a full report on the project and some of the other entries that were submitted but not chosen.

Thanks again for the interest and for taking part.

    Regards

    Robert
